How To Enjoy Christmas – Not Just Survive It

Christmas can be stressful, for many reasons. It’s the busiest time of the year, we don’t get much time to recharge in between festive gatherings, and we can feel under pressure or anxious about our responsibilities. On top of that, we might not be looking after our bodies as well as we do for the rest of the year – which makes us even more susceptible to the side effects of too much stress.

With the main event less than a week away, I’ve seen a lot of talk on social media about how to survive Christmas, or to make it through.

But, in my eyes, Christmas isn’t a time to be ‘survived’. There’s so much to enjoy about this time of year – and I think it’s a huge shame to forget that.

I understand it, because I’ve been there, but what if I told you things can be different this year? What if you could actually enjoy Christmas – not just make it through?

When I was stuck in the diet mentality, Christmas was always about two things:

1) Trying to “be good” – to avoid the mince pies, and try not to get too drunk at the Christmas party.

or

2) Falling spectacularly “off the wagon” – eating ALL the mince pies, drinking ALL the mulled wine, and generally making myself feel pretty horrendous.

Ultimately, at some point, I’d give up entirely, promising to start again in January. 

“It is Christmas, after all – I should be enjoying myself!”

Only, because I’d ditched all the healthy habits that made me feel good, I didn’t enjoy myself. I’d spend the whole festive period feeling crappy – and beating myself up with the guilt, too.

What I really needed was a balanced approach – so I could enjoy all the good stuff this time of year brings, but still feel good in the process. The problem was, I didn’t have a clue where to start.
